Camp Harmattan Board of Directors Follow-up Statement:

Last year we wrote to tell you that the board received concerns about inappropriate conduct at Camp Harmattan.

When the concerns were first raised to the board, we took them seriously and acted promptly. We retained the help of experienced, independent professionals to review the issues, our policies and procedures, and to examine the facts surrounding working at camp. We, as a board, took a closer look at the day-to-day operations and culture at camp, actively working to assess where the organization could be improved. At Camp Harmattan, the safety and well-being of our campers, staff, and volunteers are our top priority.

We are now in a position where we can communicate that we have completed this work.

We greatly appreciate those individuals who stepped forward to identify these concerns. We are all made better when people speak up. Out of respect for the privacy of everyone who was involved, the results of this process will remain confidential. Any questions you have about this process and its results can be directed to the board via email (campboard@campharmattan.com).

We believe the ministry of the camp continues to be vitalized and the board continues to build on the mission, values, and vision of Camp Harmattan. Thank you for your prayers and support as we seek God’s direction for camp ministry.

Sincerely,

Camp Harmattan Board of Directors

February 26, 2024 Statement:

As the board of directors of Camp Harmattan, we wanted to provide our community with an update about some concerns that were brought to the attention of the Board of Directors.

The board received written submittals and subsequent information relating to concerns about inappropriate conduct at Camp Harmattan. The board took prompt action and, in accordance with board policies, initiated an independent investigation process into the information in consultation with professional external resources

Throughout this process, the safety of our campers was paramount, and we made this a central part of our review. We are confident that there is no reason to be concerned for the safety of any of our campers.

We also took steps to ensure the safety of our staff while maintaining the integrity of the investigation and the dignity of everyone involved, and the ongoing operations of the camp.

The individual named in the allegations has no ongoing association with Camp Harmattan.

Concurrent with this process, we have an independent consultant reviewing our policies, procedures, and practices to ensure that we were operating to a high standard of safety and professionalism.

Since this is a workplace matter, the board has an obligation to protect the privacy and confidentiality of those involved.  We are currently working through the latter stages of this HR matter, and with respect to the processes at work and the obligations for privacy and confidentiality, will provide another public communication in due course.

We have put significant time and effort into navigating these issues, seeking the best advice possible and maintaining the highest level of integrity and fairness. We are committed to regularly reviewing our systems and policies to ensure they remain effective and aligned with our mission.

Camp Harmattan is not only a place where we provide stewardship in service to the Lord, but a community where we experience the love and nature of Jesus Christ. We do not take this for granted and thank you for your prayers and support as we shift into the 2024 season.  We are excited about what God will do in the lives of all who experience Camp Harmattan this year!

Sincerely,

Camp Harmattan Board of Directors
